Edgebrook Residence
Mid-Century Home Transformed into Modern Jewel This residence is a comprehensive renovation project that began with a 1920’s modern brick building located on the north side of Chicago. The clients needed more space for their growing family and their new home was in need of severe updating. The design nearly doubled their usable floor space and created a modern, open floor plan and large bedrooms on the second floor. A first floor bedroom was abandoned to make way for a drastically enlarged open kitchen at the core of the floor. This anchors the first floor and is connected to the many interior and exterior spaces used for entertaining and family functions. On the exterior, we juxtaposed a series of slick metal sided volumes shrouded by a more rustic wooden trellis to give the façade more depth, but not distracting or competing with the existing structure. In addition we converted an attached single car garage into interior living space, and constructed a new two car garage with a new entry way and transition space outside of the main living area. The result of these efforts yielded the clients a home that precisely meets their lifestyle, both practically and aesthetically. © Square Root Architecture + Design, Ltd.
